Overdue Recap

It’s been a while since I last updated the blog…a very long while.

There’s been a LOT happening.

I wrote a bunch of stuff to explain why, and then I deleted it…way too many words.

So many words…

Anyhow, here’s what’s been happening since the last posting.

January 2017

Novo Nordisk

We had just finished wrapping a December shoot for Novo Nordisk.

We shot part in LA, and part in Dubai. It was a lot of fun.

We didn’t get to ride camels in Dubai, but we did have one for dinner.
I don’t recommend it….extremely salty, like it’s personality.
I became a Vegan immediately after this experience…for at least a few days.

Yes, there is a Ski Resort inside the shopping mall, yes they do have live Penguins people can hug (no selfies allowed, sorry). Pinch me…seriously…what more could anyone ask for?

The photos are up on the Novo website, if you are curious. ūüėČ

Alé Swim

From the sunny man-made beaches of Dubai…to the sometimes air conditioned Studios of Orange County!

The harsh winter of Southern California could not deter us from our swimwear shoot with the lovely Holly Byrd Harrell @hollyhollyharrell for Alé by Alessandra Ambrosia.

We did a little bit of editorial fun shots…and a whole lotta e-com (available on www.everythingbutwater.com).

Abriendo Puertas

As our ‘sometimes air conditioned Orange County Studio’ door closes, another door opens.

Our friends over at the Sesame Street / Joan Ganz Cooney Center, asked us to do a few quick videos to add to a project they were working on with Abriendo Puertas.

The video is about using Apps on mobile devices to help stimulate parent/child interaction, while educating both.
When I’m off hiding from my wife and kids in the corner playing Candy Crush on my iPhone, this is exactly what I tell them I’m doing…”Research and Educational apps guys…Research and Educational apps.”

We only shot a portion of the video, which was added to an ongoing project, so I’m just putting a couple of screen grabs from our footage. Check out their website for the full video.

Headed from the skyscrapers of Downtown LA, to the “House of The Mouse”. It was only right to end the month at the happiest place on earth, photographing some of the action during the Lunar New Year celebration, for the digital side of things.

That’s it for now…

Curl-on-Curl Action!

We recently wrapped up a shoot with the NYC based Curly Hair Care geniuses, OUIDAD!

Our mission was to create a photo campaign for Ouidad’s website, blog, emails, and social media sites, as well as 3 short video highlight reels of our shoot.

Our challenge was to shoot 4 Step-By-Step looks for each hair style, in a ‘studio-type environment’, as well as¬†4 Editorial/Lifestyle looks at different beach locations for each hairstyle before and after the Step-By-Step process…and 3 BTS videos as well.

The entire shoot was only a 1-day project, so we needed to complete everything in less than 10hrs, and before the sun went down (as the last location shot was a beach/sunset look).

Knowing that hair shoots can take a fair amount of time, just to do the hair looks correctly, my producer Rebecca (@ Arpen Productions) and I came up with a game plan designed to keep us on schedule, and in budget.

Originally, the idea was to shoot all of the studio looks at the Ouidad flagship store in Santa Monica, and then commute back and forth to the beach, in between looks, to get the editorial shots.

However, this original plan became problematic, as the space inside the salon was very limited for our studio lighting, and the travel time to the beach (on that weekend) would have eaten up all of our shooting time. ¬†So…we came up with the idea to rent out two conference rooms at the Lowes Hotel, which just happened to have private beach access, as well as parking and plenty of space for our hair/makeup/wardrobe and craft service room, and a room for our mini-studio. ¬†This worked out great, as we were able to go back and forth between the hotel and beach on foot, without having to drive and park and load/unload, etc…

We started our day by meeting at the hotel and unloading all the major equipment, then a few of us headed back to the Ouidad Salon, where the models were getting their hair prepared for the first look.  We did our first shots at the salon, and then packed up and headed to the beach and hotel where we completed the rest of the looks.

Although it was a packed day, with a very tight schedule, the project went off without a hitch, and we completed all of the looks, including our sunset shot.  The clients were great, and very flexible with our input, and the crew and models were phenomenal.

You can check out more of the work on the Ouidad.com website.

And…here’s the BTS videos from our beautiful beach day, enjoy!

How do you TACO?

It’s Cinco De Mayo y’all, and that can only mean one thing…TACOS!

Ok, ok…it’s also to commemorate the Mexican Army‘s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza…but you millenials can read all about that on Wikipedia. ¬†However, this post is about TACOS!¬†Viva La Mexico!

We just wrapped up another shoot this week¬†for “A Whole & Happy Life with Candice“.

Clean, healthy, anti-inflammatory and immuno-boosting food…with FLAVOR is what Candice is all about. ¬†She’s a master of finding new, creative and delicious recipes that keep inflammation away, and help you power through the day.

And, her TACOS are just as good!

¬°Oye mis amigos!, these are no ordinary tacos, these are well crafted works of anti-inflammatory ART! ¬†Art you can EAT…and drink plenty of Margaritas with.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Here’s Candice’s¬†recipe for some tasty¬†Cinco De Mayo Vegetarian Tacos:

Preheat oven to 425F.

  • 3 types of veggies ‚Äď use anything you like .
  • 1 med to large sweet potato ‚Ästany color that is in season (I used purple sweet potato here)
  • 1 med¬†large zucchini or squash
  • 1/2 med cauliflower head
  • 1 can of chickpeas (recipe below) *optional ‚Äď replace with a can of black beans.

  • Thinly slice about 1/4 of a small¬†or med head of cabbage
  • Place in container and pour apple cider vinegar on top to cover all of cabbage
  • Then add a few pinches of sea salt
  • Mix it together and let sit in fridge for a few hours before making (better to do a 1-2 days in advanced)
  • Whatever is left over is going to be great for salads, and on top of bowls , etc. it will last a few weeks in fridge and get even more fermented which means probiotic and good for your gut health!

Corn, Almond (I use from Siete foods), Lettuce or Cabbage tortillas

  • 1-2 avocados (depending how much you want. I love guac leftovers!!)
  • 1/4 of a red or white onion (use as much or as little as you like . I love lots of raw onions in my guacamole)
  • juice of ¬Ĺ lime.
  • 1/2 tsp or to taste Sea salt or Himalayan pink salt.
  • 1/2 tsp Granulated garlic or fresh garlic (1-2 cloves) I love using granulated garlic for things like this . It‚Äôs fast and the flavor is still yummy !

Chop all veggies (use any veggies you like). I like to take each veggie after chopping and add to a bowl and drizzle with avocado oil, sea salt and granulated garlic and mix it by hand. Then I add it all to a baking sheet to roast. I cook all the veggies separately but on same sheet. This way you and your family can customize your tacos!

  • Drizzle avocado oil
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • a pinch of chili powder
  • granulated garlic and sea salt
  • Mix in bowl
  • Cook on a separate baking sheet.
  • When done cooking squeeze the other half of lime over it.
  • Cook for 8 min and then flip over for another 8-10 min .
  • Keep roasting until you like it . I love them to be a bit brown and crispy .

Make an attractive assortment of your veggies and let your family make their own combos! And if¬†you are into sauces, feel free to add some chipotle sauce, sour cream or anything else you like. Or…keep¬†it clean and simple with just the guacamole.¬†

Tricks of the Trade, Feb 2017

Photoshoot with Haley Horsager, Featuring the Photoflex 3″ Octadome.

Recently, my crew and I had the opportunity to photograph upcoming young artist Haley Horsager (www.haleyhorsager.com) for her new album cover, website and promotional shots.   Our goal was to create an interesting and attractive look for her, in an urban setting.

Working on a limited budget, while at the same time wanting to cover as many different setups as possible, I knew my Photoflex 3″ Small Octadome would be my main weapon of choice.

Moving around the loft & exterior of the historic location in downtown L.A. was much easier and quicker with the small Octadome and strobe fully assembled. My assistant was able to maneuver easily through doorways, into elevators, and up and down stairs and onto fire escapes. Using the Octadome in combination with a single light-stand, allowed quick and subtle adjustments to the direction of the light, which helped us achieve the balance we were looking for.

By adding the fabric grid to the front of the Octadome’s diffusion, we were able to add just a kiss of light in certain areas (like the beauty portraits mixed with daylight, and the shots with Haley in the window where we just needed some fill).

When we wanted to make the photos of Haley “POP”, and bring in the background, or freeze the action, we only needed to quickly bring up the strobe’s power and close down on the camera shutter and aperture. For some of the shots we switched between a Ring flash and the Octadome, and also used both in combination. The quality of light was easily adjusted to match, by adding or removing the diffusion and fabric grid.

My favorite place to use the Octadome is on location, outdoors. It smaller size and round shape keep it from being blown around in the wind, and it’s especially versatile when used with the hand-held Photoflex LiteReach Plus. This is the best way for an assistant to *Hollywood the light, when needed.

What I personally love about the Small Photoflex Octadome, is it’s amazing versatility. Although it is small and easily transportable, it can still cover a very wide area if needed…or it can be used to make a very “direct light source” if desired. The quality, and shape of light it can create, is amazing. It is my favorite “go-to” tool for most shoots.

*to Hollywood (verb), meaning “Don’t take the time to put it on a stand, just hold it where it needs to be held“.

That windy, windy day…

If anyone remembers that early morning¬†last week…

Where the wind was howling up a storm.

I was down at Palisades Park, and noticed the trees bending in a most peculiar direction.

I had¬†realized…

I’ve never seen the wind

blow towards the Sea.

People passing by, seemingly indifferent.

Giant, Tiny Airplanes overhead.

LAFAYETTE 148 – The white Shirt Project

“Thursday’s¬†Throwback” to a really great shoot earlier this year at The Focus Studio in Venice for the LAFAYETTE 148 White Shirt Project, with two amazing Mothers…actress/writer Diane Farr (NUMB3RS & Rescue Me) and Model/Actress/Blogger Catherine McCord.

It was such an amazing gift to be able to meet and work with these two amazing talents.  We had a great time, and the images that came out of it were so memorable.

A special thanks to Morgan Acaldo at Phase One, for letting me test-drive the IQ250 back for this project, as well as Damion Poirier for bringing the digital gear from Samys.

Here’s a few personal favorites from the shoot that day.
